Last.fm

Recently, whenever I searched for something music related, one of the top few links was always Last.fm. When I first checked it out, I thought it was just another online radio station and much to my surprise, its much more. Its really a music network, kind of like Soulseek, only with a more graphic interface and the ability to quickly browse through loads of music. You download a client which tracks your listening habits on your preferred audio player and all that information is stored in your profile, almost like Flickr but for music. You can also use the client to search for music relating to a particular tag.

The clean and simple interface and pace of connection meannt I easily went from Radiohead to Iron & Wine to Modest Mouse and The Shins and lots more. Admittedly its not exactly similar but if you like Radiohead, you might like the rest and if not, you can quickly skip a track. You can also click on a few buttons to add a tag to the track, recommend it, add it to your "Loved" tracks or fave tracks or ban the track and ensure you won't hear it again.

Once you've spent enought time at it, you would have built up your own profile which other people can check out and vice versa. The system also keeps track of like minded people and bands them together. This simply means you can find more people who also happen to listen to Tanzanian tribal electronica as well.

Its a good step forward from the old free to air radio stations that basically form playlists based on their own agendas. With Last.fm, you get to listen to what other people listen to and decide whether its for you or not.

I just wish it was integrated into my audio player instead of being standalone but its a cool way to find stuff you haven't heard or simply have a radio station which is highly eclectic but fits perfectly with you.

Tabblo

Here we go! Electronic scrapbooking. So you don't have to waste hundreds of dollars on various little things to make a book. I have to say I never quite understood why people pay money to make scrapbooks when they're called scrapbooks anyway. I thought the original idea was to use scraps to make a book which you can look at again in future and gush over your baby's first fart or whatever. Anyway, Tabblo lets you make your own photo collages and stick text onto them. Its like if you don't have photoshop and like templates that look like blogs.

If you have photos on Flickr, you can use those as well as uploading as you please. You set the privacy settings on each scrapbook you make and you can also browse through other people's stuff as well.

WMMNA Redesign

Woa we make money not art has undergone a redesign. What used to be a slightly messy layout has become cleaner and perhaps more readable. I do find that it doesn't give me the same feeling as it used to, a sort of broke, tech-geeky art inventor type place. Still, its strangely easier on the eyes... I think. Now its like the same broke, tech geeky art inventor vibe bought a pink shirt.

A Girl's Life

A Girl's Life is an offshoot of BEINGHUNTED, in collaboration with Naive, which is a pretty cool online store for the ladies. Its girl centric and whilst the features are on stuff that would certainly please the fairer sex, there's nothing to stop the guys from appreciating what's being showcased either. Separated into 3 distinct categories, this is set to be the next cool site to check out for the latest stuff.

You can also read notes by Naive, who happens to be Singaporean by the way.

Thinglink

Thinglink is a database of created things. From music, to art, products and ideas, its a platform that allows makers and creators to link their creations and document it online, creating a resource for manufacturers and other creators to browse through. Started by Aula Design Oy , a small Helsinki-based company, Thinglink hopes to create social networks amongst creative types from all over the world.

Setting up an account is simple and straightforward and you can easily create a link to your own items, giving your stuff an audience that may not have previous access to it and vice versa. Flickr users can also use their photos on the site as well.

Each thing linked on the site gets a unique 6 digit code that becomes its product code, much like an ISBN number, it allows for easy searching and tracking. Each thinglink can also be tagged with various tags to help in the description of the items. In fact, they encourage makers to write more about their creations. Thinglink is a great way for any makers to showcase their work, given that everything is free and as it grows, so will the audience. Initiatives like this certainly help the little man to fulfill their dreams.

Cribcandy

I noticed one of the ads flashing on Gizmodo and an Eames Chair in the banner caught my eye.

Cribcandy is "a thumbnail bookmark blog with the best stuff for your home." Its powered by Wists, which is a sort of archive of people's bookmarks. You can use Wists to bookmark anything on the web and make a thumbnail and a short write up for future reference. Cribcandy justs sorts out and categorizes the interesting shopping stuff amongst these. You add tags to each of your bookmarks if you want.

So you have the chairs category and when you open it up, its like insta-mini-mega-catalogue of cool chairs, each one pictured and linked. This is categorized under interface cos its a new/old method of storing and accessing information that is constantly updated and makes for a great product design references/ideas resource and hyperlinked internet shopping fun.
